The Princess Royal Anne's visit to the Veternica cave

The daughter of Queen Elisabeth II, Princess Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise visited Veternica cave in the Medvednica nature park during her official visit to Zagreb. The Princess was welcomed by the director of the Public institution “Medvednica nature park” Nives Farkaš – Topolnik in the climbers' lodging „Glavica“.

The Princes Anne is the patron of the Whitley Fund for Nature, a foundation which rewarded Danijela Hamidović, Mr.Sc. of the Croatian Biospeleological Society for protection of long-fingered bat in years 2000, 2002. and 2007.

Accompanied by Andrea Vlašić, Danijela Hamidović i Denis Kovačića, the Princess took a guided tour of the cave and expressed a great interest in bats which are one of the most endangered mammal groups in Europe. She chose Veternica for her visit since it is the only cave situated in the protected area where continuous bat monitoring, protection and promotion are carried out.

The Princess Anne was also accompanied by the British ambassador David Blunt.

The thank you letter from the British Ambassador David Blunt to the Public Institution "Nature Park Medvednica" for the hospitality to HRH, The Princess Royal, Princess Anne.

Closing of the Veternica cave

From the 22nd of November Veternica cave will be closed for visitors due to bats hibernation.

This autumn has pleased both us and bats with nice weather and high temperatures. This is about to end, and the winter-time inhabitants of the Veternica cave are getting ready for their winter sleep. Because of that, the next weekend, 15th and 16th of November, is the last one this year when you can visit the Veternica cave. After that the cave will be closed till the end of March, or until the bats wake up from winter hibernation.

The Zrinski mine is still opened for visitors, with guided tours on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 11:00 to 16:00. For larger groups the mine will be opened on work days by appointment with the public institution „Medvednica nature park“.

Newly developed site in Medvednica nature park - „Gorsko zrcalo“

On Tuesday, 4th November 2008, an exciting event marked the opening of the site „Gorsko zrcalo“(Mountain mirror) in the Medvednica nature park.
During the opening ceremony the development project was presented and everyone was able to enjoy the new appearance of the Gorsko zrcalo site.
Up to the present day this site was known only to alpinists, cavers and experienced Medvednica hikers, so we wanted to make other lovers of Medvednica and its nature aware of this destination. The project was carried out by the public institution „Medvednica nature park“ in collaboration with Hrvatske vode.

Visitors are lead by signposts all the way to the site. Along the path are educational boards bringing information on natural values of the Nature park Medvednica, as well as Gorsko zrcalo itself. The path leads to the new attractive wooden bridge overlooking the stream. Hikers can have a pleasant break under the renovated shed with tables and benches nearby, listening to the stream murmuring just under the shed and admiring the view of one of the most beautiful nature phenomena – Gorsko zrcalo.

We had a great time during the opening ceremony absailing down the rock of almost 30 m height with the help from the Croatian Mountain Rescue Service and the Adventure academy – Multisport. Members of the Croatian female expedition, preparing for a climb on Mount Everest's highest peak, joined us and demonstrated their climbing skills.

We truly regret if you were not on the ceremony, and hope that you will join us on our next event.

New educational trail „Slani potok“ on the north side of Medvednica

In collaboration with “Matija Gubec” primary school from Gornja Stubica and Gornja Stubica district council, public institution “Medvednica Nature Park” has developed a new educational trail “Slani potok” (Salty creek). On the 15th of October 2008 pupils and teachers, together with the public institution staff, have celebrated a traditional “Greeting to the autumn” by a tour of the “Slani potok” educational trail. The trail starts by the most famous lime tree in Croatia, "Gubec's lime" in Gornja Stubica, and ends next to the old salt mine. The mine was used for mining of precious salt during the middle ages, as early as in 14 th century, according to the written records.
During the two hour pleasant walk pupils discovered many interesting stories about natural, cultural and historical values of the areas surrounding the trail, for example which animals live there, the way of mining in the middle ages, where is the underground salt from, why is the creek water salty, and many more.
In addition to educational boards, sign-post for orientation and safety of visitors were placed along the trail, as well as eaves, tables and benches next to the salty water spring.
