International symosium ProGEO, Rab

The 5th International ProGEO Symposium on Conservation of the Geological Heritage and ProGEO Working Group 1 Annual Meeting was held from 1st to 5th of October 2008 on the island of Rab.
More than 80 geologists from Portugal, Russia, Spain, Romania, Turkey, Albania and other countries participated at the symposium.
During five days lectures on European geoheritage, legal frameworks and management of national geoparks, communication with public, protection in practice, geotourism and other geology – related topics were held. The main goal of the symposium was scientific and practical input for geoconservation in Europe with a focus on geotourism.
Public institution “Medvednica Nature Park” introduced itself with a presentation “Renovation and redesign of medieval Zrinski mine for tourist purposes” explaining how visitors of the mines can get information on past geological events on Medvednica, history, cultural and natural values of the site itself, as well as of the whole Medvednica Nature Park. This restoration project is a good example how touristic and cultural potentials of old abandoned mines can be fulfilled, which can be a source of knowledge for future similar projects in Croatia or elsewhere.

REDUCTION OF THE VOLUME OF "GUBEC'S LIME" TREETOP

On March 13, 2008 in Gornja Stubica treetop volume of the famous "Gubec's lime" was reduced. It was decided that the reduction of treetop volume was necessary since there was a risk of tree falling under its own weight or from wind gust.
During 2007 company Stablosan d.o.o. from Velika Gorica made a study on restoration of Gubec's lime. It was determined that the lime is in very good health and of high vitality. Nevertheless, the inside of the tree trunk has decayed during the years and now is hollow. For that reason the carrying capacity of the trunk is significantly decreased and the trunk had more and more problems in carrying its treetop. To decrease the pressure on weakened trunk, experts proposed volume reduction of the treetop for 50%. Ministry of culture regulated nature protection conditions under which the restoration is performed.
The expert team from Zagrebacki holding d.o.o., branch office "Zrinjevac" performed cutting of the treetop under supervision of Public institution "Nature Park Medvednica", Public institution for managing natural values in Krapinsko-zagorska county and Gorny Stubica district.
Gubec's lime will now welcome spring in a new attire and with relief, with no fear of stormy winds.

Dear adopters,

First of all, we would like to thank you!

We would like to thank you for your willingness to participate in our promotional activity "Adopt a bat!" whose only goal is to increase public awareness of this endangered species - bats, and Veternica cave - their habitat.
The list of adopters is continually growing, even Ministers became owners of some bats, and not only their owners but their true lobbyists. Many of you have been adopting bats for several years, and some of you have visited your adopted bats.
As well, many of you have called us at the end of last year worried about "expiration" of their adopter rights, and wishing to extend it. For that reason, starting this year, we are introducing this possibility for those willing to renew their adoption rights with new payment and in that way help protection of bats and the cave in which they live.

Dear helpers,

During the whole month of February we did our best to clean Medvednica, we met a dozen times and collected a great amount of waste... and this way we would like to thank you for your help.
Our experience from these "mini" cleaning actions during February made us realize that our citizens are, never the less, used to those big traditional cleaning actions.
For that reason we are planning to organize one big cleaning action on Planet Earth Day.
We are looking forward to seeing you there and thank you in advance for your participation!

Spring opening of Zrinski mine

On Saturday, March 1, at 10 am a big spring cleaning action of Zrinski mine, its surroundings and souvenir shop was held. Ten bags of waste were collected and Zrinski mine glows! Several brave citizens, mostly pensioners and students, joined employees of Public institution "Nature Park Medvednica" and members of "Aikido" association, since the weather was very cold and windy. Park employees handed out free beans and goulash, prepared by our Park supervisor ?tef, to all participants of the cleaning action.
As well, we would like to thank all media representatives that followed this cleaning action (some of which did a hard days job), and in that way helped in promotion of our cultural wealth, Zrinski mine.

NOTICE

We would like to ask all visitors and mountain climber, regarding the fact that it is winter time (snow and ice on the trails and the days are shorter), to pick a route that you can physically and in due time master, and do not go alone, carry a lamp, wear appropriate clothes and shoes, carry a cell phone, walk on trails you know, and in case you detour, return to the last tree with a path mark.
Mountain trails are not cleaned of snow and are used to one's own responsibility. In case of an accident call 112.

Bird houses on streams received their first inhabitants!

In 2004 and 2005 NP Medvednica and scientists of Institute of Ornithology have researched birds which come near streams: white-throated dippers, pied and gray wagtails. While in the past most probably every larger stream on Medvednica had its own couple of white-throated dippers, during first researches ornithologists found only 7 couples, each one on one stream. They have recommended several protection measures for white-throated dippers, which included placing 15 nesting houses. This species collects food exclusively in streams and for that reason is completely dependant on them. For nesting they choose holes or caverns in rocks, supporting walls, openings in dams, beams beneath bridges, and such places are more and more seldom in the Park. The first season white-throated dippers have already settled four houses! There are 9 couples living in the Park and the number may grow if we continue protecting them. You can easily recognize white-throated dipper yourself. It looks like blackbird, but is just a bit more "rounded" and has white chest.

Vodoprivreda Zagreb is the sponsor of research "Monitoring of white-throated dipper and wagtail populations in NP Medvednica in 2005".

Research of birds as a part of project "Forest management in harmony with nature" has begun

The first birds which will be researched by ornithologists and employees of PI NPM are day predatory birds. Research consists of a method where researcher releases calls of certain birds and waits for day predatory birds to call back. A similar method is used in researching owls. Associations of other birds on Medvednica will be counted in a customary way, by listing all birds that researchers see or hear.
As a part of the same project, research of forest bats will begin this month, as well.
The purpose of both researches is to determine differences in contents and number of chosen groups in forests which are regularly cut (managed forests) and forests which are not managed (reservations of forest vegetation), and based on given results work out protection measures of these valuable birds in our forest.
Research should even more improve good collaboration between foresters, science sector and Public institution "Nature Park Medvednica".
The research is financially supported by the Kingdom of the Netherlands as a part of Matra program.

Knights and miners, tradition and present on Zrinski mine in Nature Park Medvednica, December 9, 2005, at 12 am

In 2004, on St. Barbara's Day, medieval Zrinski mine was opened for the first time as a tourist attraction (first such mine in Croatia). Public institution Nature Park Medvednica continued with renovation works, and this year instead of common speeches and presentations of the work done, we shall mark St. Barbara's Day, patroness of miners (December 4) and International Mountain's Day (December 11) in a different way, on a place the most appropriate for the occasion, Zrinski mine on Mount Medvednica. This year's event was made possible with the financial support of Zagreb City Tourist Board.

Medieval period and mining tradition will be connected in a unique whole by actor Damir Saban. Owner of the mine, noble woman Jelena Tahi (born Zrinski), arrives to check the safety of the mine and the quality of coin money, and brave knights from the Troop of Knights of the Golden Chalice from Donja Stubica will show their knight's readiness. Participants of this event will be able to try out some attractive knight's skills.

There are no more knights today, swords, bows and arrows are in museums, but the tradition saved by the miners still lives on, as a memory of all former generations, which prepared themselves for the extremely difficult work in the mine on a very specific way.

Association of former and present students of Faculty of mining, geology and petroleum "Sretno!", shall perform their traditional "JUMP OVER THE LEATHER". Besides PRESIDIUM, Adlatus dexter, Adlatus sinister, Contra pic dexter, Contra pic sinister, 24 freshmen and their professors from Faculty of mining, geology and petroleum shall participate.

Since this ceremony is connected to a rather large amount of brewed wine, it will end with a miners' brunch.

This is, as well, an opportunity to inform the public on the news about Zrinski mine, which consist of longer corridors and a new chapel with a wooden sculpture of St. Barbara in natural size.

Join us in this revival of medieval and mining customs!

Public institution "Nature Park Medvednica"

Geological educational trail Miroslavec is renovated

Public institution "Nature Park Medvednica" has renovated geological educational panels on "Miroslavec" trail, which stretches from "Šestinski lagvić" to Kraljičin zdenac.

Complex geological history and Medvednica’s structure are shown in a simple and understandable way with numerous illustrations, maps and rocks "in situ". Educational panels, which existed until now were devastated by atmospheric conditions and time, and somewhat by unconscientious visitors.

During panel design, already recognizable visual identity of Nature Park Medvednica was followed.

We invite you to take a walk down educational trail "Miroslavec", which count Miroslav Kulmer adapted for his wife’s strolls on Medvednica.

Zrinski mine – the first mine in Croatia opened for visitors

On December 4, 2004, on St. Barbara's day – patroness of miners, PUBLIC INSTITUTION "NATURE PARK MEDVEDNICA" has opened for visitors medieval led-zinc ore mine, which has been renovated for a long time as to make it safe and attractive for visitors.

Scenes of medieval mining were reconstructed to evoke miners' appearance, clothes and tools of those times. In the mine you can see statues of miners in their natural size (work of Damir Pavelić). The authentic appearance of medieval mine is completed by sounds of dripping water, pick blows in the rock, creaking of wooden wheel-barrows, and muffled conversations of miners.

Mine's underground has been abandoned for a long time. There are no miners, their tools or things connected to their way of living. Public institution “Nature Park Medvednica” tried to bring back the ancient life of Zrinski mine, a part of our rich heritage and enlighten the hard life and work of our ancestors. With great respect to the generations of miners and everything they created, we invite you to discover a part of their secret!

GOOD LUCK !
