ABOUT MEDVEDGRAD
It was built in the thirteen century on the initiative of the Pope Innocent IV. That was during the reign of the bishop Filip, a close associate of Croatia-Hungary king Bela IV., who supported the construction of Medvedgrad. Expert literature has a lot of dilemmas regarding building of Medvedgrad, but it is certain that the burg was completed in 1254. It was built for defense against the Tartars on the hill Mali Plazur – on top of the south slope at an extremely favorable position. From that point they could monitor the area from Medvednica in the north to Turopolje in the south. A path along the Sava river (once a ship crossing) protected the other fortified town Susedgrad.
About the fort
Medvedgrad had double walls and three doors. If the enemy wanted to capture it, he had to pass both the outer and inner wall. Two towers were built for defense that did not have doors at ground level, so defenders could defend themselves from upstairs. In addition, a tactic to break down resistance defenders during that time was to besiege the city and wait for the enemy to run out of water and food supplies. However, in that case Medvedgrad had a solution – a cistern with a filter of large and small stones where they collected rainwater and had spacious storage for food.
It is considered that the most valued building is an octagonal St. Filip and Jakov chapel with stone corners, rosettes, and Romanic portal 3 m high. Most interesting is that Medvedgrad was never used as defense because it was never attacked. One of the assumptions is that it was built to serve as a treasure trove of ecclesiastical treasures .
About the masters
Medvedgrad has changed many masters – Croatian – Hungarian kings, Counts of Celje, Zrinski, Gregorian,… 107 masters altogether! The last residents and owners of Medvedgrad were Gregorian. They moved in 1571. to a newly built manor in Šestine.
It was abandoned after a devastating earthquake in 1590. Insight into the rich culture and living was gained only through archaeological excavation .
Altar of the homeland
In 1994. under the southern tower, the Altar of the homeland, the work of the sculptor Kuzma Kovačić, was erected in honor of all Croatian heroes. Stone cubes from rocks from different parts of Croatia recall the Croatian coat of arms. Carved on the cubes are motives from the reign of Prince Branimir, a large cross and the lyrics of the Croatian anthem. There are also glass elements shaped like tears which symbolize the difficult history of the Croatian people.
Altough never attacked, Medvedgrad had a turbulent history accompanied by many stories and legends. Certainly the most famous one is about notorious Crna kraljica (The Black Queen, Barbara Celjska) – vicious master of Medvedgrad. Even today you can feel her presence during the walk through the walls.
