Animal species are protected based on the Law of Nature Protection through permanent protection on the territory of entire Croatia , or by Law on Hunting – closed season.

Law banes every activity that disturbs protected animal in its natural life and free development (scattering, chasing, catching, capturing, hurting or killing animals, devastating their development stages: eggs, larvae, young, its nests – litter and habitat).

It is forbidden to hide, sell, buy and alienate, that is, every acquisition of protected animal, as well as stuffing protected animals if captured, that is, killed without previous permission from Institute for Nature Protection


VERTEBRATE

AMPHIBIAN: all are protected except Edible Frog (with protection conditions and measures).

REPTILES: all except Nose-horned Viper

BIRDS: All birds are protected except birds protected by closed season, and Magpies, Hooded Crows, and Jays.

MAMMALS: All bats, insectivores (except Moles), 4 species of Rodents ( Garden Dormouse , Hazel Dormouse , Forest Dormouse , Fat Dormouse and Eurasian Red Squirrel ), beasts - Stoat





INVERTEBRATE

BUTTERFLIES - 5 protected species (Scarce Swallowtail , Swallowtail , Purple Emperor , Lesser Purple Emperor , and Poplar Admiral).

ANTS: Red Wood Ant

CRABS: Common Crayfish

Large number of TERRESTRIAL SNAILS (it is necessary to determine which species habitat on Medvednica).
