Diluvial fauna on Medvednica

BACK

According to fossil remains found on certain locations on Medvednica (Veternica, Big cave on Lipa, Grmoščica, Šupljata cave near Markuševec) we discovered that the fauna of this mountain was very diverse and interesting during Pleistocene-Diluvia. Found representatives of northern polar fauna are: Arctic Fox ( Alopex lagopus ), Wolverine ( Gulo gulo ), Ptarmigan ( Lagopus sp.), Mountain hare ( Lepus timidus ), and Alpine ibex ( Capra ibex ). These northern animal species came to this area during Glacial Age. Of middle European fauna we can find remains of Elk ( Cervus elaphus ), European Mole ( Talpa europaea ), Red Squirrel ( Scirius vulgaris ), Wolf ( Canis lupus ), Red Fox ( Vulpes vulpes ), Roe Deer ( Capreolus capreolus ), Bovine ( Bos taurus ), and Aurochs ( Bos primigenus ), which still lived in Croatian Turopolje in 17 th century. Interesting are findings of Lynx ( Linx linx ), Chamois ( Rupicapra rupicapra ), Fallow Deer ( Dama dama ), as well as remains of the extinct Cave Bear ( Ursus speleus ) and Brown Bear ( Ursus arctos ).

Of southern elements let us mention fossil Cave Lion ( Felis spelea ). Remains of Golden Eagle ( Aquilla chrysaëtos ), Capercaillie ( Tetrao urogallus ), Black Grouse ( Tetrao tetrix ) and European Beaver (Castor fiber) were discovered.
