General
on geology of Medvednica
Nature Park Medvednica is formed of rocks
with wide stratigraphy determination, from Paleozoic to Quaternary
with representation of all genetic rock types ; igneous , sedimentary
and metamorphic rocks, which tells us that Medvednica has a long and
turbulent geological history.
Immediate contact of rocks of different age,
different directions in which layers spread, as well as their inter-relationship
indicates the complexity of tectonic processes. Characteristic are
fault lines, and by their direction the shape and direction of stretching
of Medvednica is determined.
In that sense important are faults along the
northwest and southeast mountain edge by which the mountain is bounded
on one side towards Zagorje and on the other toward Sava valley.
Tectonic youth of this area is visible through
earthquakes, which are quite common on the north and south side of
the mountain, and the biggest number and strongest earthquakes are
connected to slopes of Medvednica. Near settlements KaĊĦina and Planina,
was the epicenter of the strongest earthquake. Seismicity in this area
is VIII to IX degrees according to MSC scale (for the period of last
500 years).
Medvednica area belongs to southwest part
of Pannonian pool, with very complex tectonic structure. Pressures
which brought to extensions of space are especially significant for
determination of relationships. Initial extension occurred during the
period of Oligocene-early Miocene. The main extension occurred during
the period of Egenburg -Badenian.
